There are three things that are central to their ethnic identity. The most important subject in society is the Peul herds, and there are many names, traditions and taboos concerning cattle. The size of the herd is a tangible sign of health and prosperity of a person. Second is their religion, Islam, and three of their culture which is dominated by a concept called Pulaaku the true essence of a Peul. High value is given to the virtues of Semtende, modesty and privacy, Munyal, patience and strength (both physical and moral), Haakile, care and thought. The biggest insult you can do is to tell a Peul who lacks Pulaaku. Another very important element of the Peul culture, it is a great aesthetic sense, you could almost define a cult of beauty, which is evident in the costumes and elaborate traditional hairstyles.
