The Apis calf statue was discovered in 1895 during the excavations of the Pillar of Pillars by Potti, the archaeologist and the first general director of the Greco-Roman Museum. The statue is made of diorite stone of the god Serapis in the form of the Apis bull, with the sun disc and the sacred serpent between its horns. The Apis calf symbolized fertility to the ancient Egyptians and was worshiped in Memphis. They considered it the spirit of the god Ptah. He was crowned by placing the disk of the sun between his horns. He was chosen white in color with black spots on the forehead, neck and back. He lived in the sacred barn among his cows, and upon his death the priests would bury him in A state funeral, then another calf is crowned in the sacred barn in a grand celebration.
