Asbestosis is a chronic lung disease caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers. Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals that were widely used in various industries for their heat resistance and insulating properties. When asbestos fibers are disturbed, they can become airborne and easily inhaled into the lungs. Over time, chronic exposure to asbestos can cause inflammation and scarring (fibrosis) of the lung tissue, leading to the development of asbestosis.
