The cathedral, dedicated to Saints Constantine and Helen, was built between 1654 and 1658 by Constantin Şerban. Soon afterwards, the church became Wallachia’s metropolitan cathedral. In 1925 the Metropolitanate was elevated to the rank of Patriarchate. To the left is the Palace of the Patriarchate, where in 1859, the old provinces of Romania and Moldavia united under a single nation.
