Pictured is the wardi subspecies of the great blue heron, binomial name Ardea herodias. The heron is standing at the edge of the Grand River in Oklahoma, with its reflection in the water, a short distance below the Pensacola Dam. The Pensacola Dam on the Grand River forms the Grand Lake o' the Cherokees. The great blue heron has five subspecies, with the distribution of the wardi in Kansas and Oklahoma to northern Florida, with sightings in southeastern Georgia.
