Hermann Wolf was a German immigrant who operated a trading post on the Navajo Reservation at a site on the Little Colorado River called "Wolf's Crossing" and is the only marked grave in the ghost town of Canyon Diablo. The tiny town sprung up to serve the needs of the men building the railroad bridge across the canyon. The hastily built town included brothels, gambling dens and saloons that seemed to satisfy the bulk of the consumer demands. Open 24 hours and with no lawmen to regulate or intervene, the town was a dark and dangerous place, often said to have been worse than Tombstone or Dodge City, and its main street was christened “Hell Street.”
