Tempelhof was the centre of the Berlin Airlift of 1948-49. During the Cold War Tempelhof served as an American Military base until 1993. The airport was closed in 2008. It still is one of the largest buildings in the world. The former airfield has subsequently been used as a recreational space known as "Tempelhofer Feld".
