The hydra is a creature out of ancient Greek and Roman mythology.  Specifically known as the Lernaen Hydra, it was said to inhabit  the lake of Lerna in the Argolid, a lake reported to be the entrance to the underworld.  In the legends, Hercules slays it as the second of his twelve labors.  The hydra was supposedly the child of Typhon and Echidna.  It had poisosous breath and if you chopped off one head, two would arise to take it`s place.
