Magnificent pink and purple Saucer Magnolias are deciduous and bloom during winter in South Africa. Their leafless stems spire into the blue sky and provide a scaffold effect which the flowers use to their advantage to be pollenated by a variety of insects and the wind. The large, goblet shaped flowers start as tightly wound petals which gradually open up into saucer shaped blooms exposing their whiter colored interiors. They have an attractive odor and make fabulous ornamental trees.
