The construction of this enormous bastion with retaining walls, which are more than 20 metres high and up to six metres thick, began in 1544 and replaced a pre-work of the medieval castle, which stands on the same site. On it stood stables that gave the bastei its name. The wooden door wings on the south side date back to the 19th century. The pungent `Egyptian Gate` was built by Bonaventura Hödl around 1820, the pergola around 1900. In the eastern Basteiecke there is the only surviving fortress tower, the so-called Lunar Tower.
