At the time of the Byzantine Empire, Sultanahmet Square was a hippodrome. Today it is a paved square, without stands, with a wonderful park, benches and fountains, but some monuments from that time still remain. Constantinople was built on the model of Rome. Constantine declared it the capital of the empire.
