Bark is the outer layer of the stems and roots of woody plants. Plants that have bark include trees, woody vines, and shrubs. Bark refers to all tissue outside the vascular cambium and is a non-technical term. [1] This layer covers the wood and consists of an inner skin and an outer skin. The inner bark, which on older stems is living tissue, includes the innermost layer of periderm. The outer skin on old stems includes dead tissue on the surface of the stem, along with the outermost part of the periderm and all the tissue on the outer side of the periderm. The outer bark of a tree that lies outside the living periderm is also called the rhytidome
