Ferrara has numerous palaces dating from the Renaissance, when it hosted the court of the House of Este. For its beauty and cultural importance, it has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The statue of Girolamo Savonarola, friar, politician, preacher and prophet born in Ferrara in 1452. Excommunicated by the Pope was hanged and burned in Florence in 1498. He is considered a precursor of the Protestant Reformation.
