The Windmills Of Golden Gate Park San Francisco. When The Civic Leaders Of San Francisco Started Planning Golden Gate Park In 1870,It Was Just A Barren Stretch Of Sand Dunes. Before All The Trees Could Be Planted,The Park Engineers First Had To Plant Sand Hardy Low Grasses. As They Started Planting More And More Regular Grasses,Then Plants And Trees,More And More Water Was Needed. Having To Keep Buying This Water Was Getting Very Expensive,So They Had The Idea Of Using Windmills. Two Windmills Were Built Along The Very Western Edge Of The Park For The Purpose Of Pumping Water For The Parks Irrigation. Dutch Windmill,Built In 1902,Has The Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden. Along The Southern Side Is Murphy Windmill,And The Millwrights Cottage,Built In 1905. It Is Said These Two Windmills Could Pump As Much As 2.5 Million Gallons (Nearly 9.5 Million Liters) Of Water Per Day. As Seen 10 April 2023.

The Windmills of Golden Gate Park San Francisco. When the civic leaders of San Francisco started planning Golden Gate Park in 1870,it was just a barren stretch of sand dunes. Before all the trees could be planted,the park engineers first had to plant sand hardy low grasses. As they started planting more and more regular grasses,then plants and trees,more and more water was needed. Having to keep buying this water was getting very expensive,so they had the idea of using windmills. Two windmills were built along the very Western edge of the park for the purpose of pumping water for the Parks irrigation. Dutch Windmill,built in 1902,has the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden.
