In the period after the American Civil War, various clubs started appearing across the country, including at universities.
The universities clubs were always restricted to just alumni of that one school. Then, in 1890, William Thomas, president of the San Francisco Harvard Club, had the idea of forming a club for alumni of any and all schools.
This became the bases for the University Club. They offer lectures after dining in private, unobstructed settings. There is also dorm facilities for those members who are traveling, and athletic rooms.
It is now also open to woman.
